The BRACESOX™ Story

The Bracesox™; line of undersleeve products was designed by me, Anne Adams, an orthopedic patient. I was 18 when I had my first knee injury while I was playing on the field hockey team at San Jose State University. 10 days before Olympic Development camp I stepped in a gopher hole and blew out my knee--complete ACL tear, torn meniscus--you know, the makings of a bum knee. I was fitted with my first knee brace in the spring of 1980. That was my first step in the development of the Bracesox™.

I quickly grew tired of the abrasive side effects of knee bracing. I was wearing my brace four to five hours each day for workout and practice. Although my brace was working, my skin was taking a beating! The chaffing, slipping, rubbing and resulting skin irritation were becoming worse and worse. Many times, when the skin irritation was at its worst, I would participate in an activity without my brace, risking further damage to my joint. This proved to be a poor decision on a few occasions when I reinjured my knee.

During the early 80's, I had an idea to help with the problems associated with the various knee bracing systems I had tried. The Bracesox™ was born. A simple cotton/lycra sleeve to be worn on the leg before putting on the brace. It worked! I had two of them that I used constantly through the end of the 80's. What I began to notice over the years was that I had stopped injuring my knee as much. Why? In large part, it was simply because I was wearing my brace. What a concept!

I noticed others I had known over the years that had injured their knees and received bracing like me. They ended up not wearing their braces for the very reasons I had stopped wearing mine (pre-Bracesox™), and I watched as they reinjured their knees, just as I had.

I began test-marketing the first Bracesox™ in the late 80's on other knees besides my own. The testers were elated. The official start of Bracesox™, The Original coincided with the birth of my first child, Aaron in 1991. This was no coincidence. I decided to leave my teaching position at the high school and take the leap into entrepreneurship at the same time. Somehow, spending all day with other people's children and putting mine in day-care just didn't seem right. Well, that proved to be the right reason and motivation and the business (and family) has grown every year since then. The Bracesox™ can be worn with virtually every brand knee brace on the market. Many of the top 10 brace manufacturers include Bracesox™ with the braces they sell. I am constantly reminded that everything happens for a reason. That gopher hole "disaster" turned out to be the opportunity of my lifetime. I call it the gopher hole that keeps on giving! But beware of the knock-offs!

The Bracesox™ has also proved to be especially useful for osteoarthritis brace patients, the ranks of whom I have now joined! I really love my OA bracing and I'm so glad I can still be active and in comfort thanks to the Bracesox™.
